June 15th - Father’s Day - Origin: The idea for Father's Day originated in Spokane, Washington, in 1909, with Sonora Smart Dodd wanting to honor her father, a widowed Civil War veteran who raised her and her siblings. The first Father's Day was celebrated in Spokane on June 19, 1910. Father's Day became a national holiday in the U.S. in 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed it into law. While the U.S. and many other countries celebrate on the third Sunday of June, other nations like Australia and New Zealand celebrate on the first Sunday of September, while some European countries celebrate on different dates throughout the year, such as March 19th or Ascension Day. Neckties are a popular Father's Day gift. Barbecues and grilled meals are a common Father's Day tradition, with many families opting for this type of celebration. Oldest Father's Day Card: An estimated 4,000-year-old Babylonian tablet, carved by a young boy named Elmesu, is considered the oldest "Father's Day card". The rose is the official flower of Father's Day, with white roses typically worn to honor a deceased father and red roses for a living father.
